{"id":3819,"date":"2017-09-22T13:46:10","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T12:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/?p=3819"},"modified":"2017-09-22T13:49:51","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T12:49:51","slug":"lga-responds-to-cancellation-of-ubers-taxi-licence-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/?p=3819","title":{"rendered":"LGA RESPONDS TO CANCELLATION OF UBER\u2019S TAXI LICENCE IN LONDON"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"WordSection1\">\n<div id=\"attachment_3820\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3820\" class=\"wp-image-3820\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1262-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1262-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1262-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1262-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1262-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1262-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.gpsj.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_1262-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taxis working in London: Photo: GPSJ<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Responding to today\u2019s decision by Transport for London not to renew taxi firm Uber\u2019s licence to operate in London, Cllr Simon Blackburn, Chair of the Local Government Association\u2019s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said:\u00a0\u201cOther licensing authorities will be watching with interest today\u2019s announcement by Transport for London, which has decided not to renew Uber\u2019s licence to operate in London.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cCouncils have long argued that there is a need for the existing outdated taxi laws to be updated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe legislation governing aspects of taxis and private hire vehicles pre-dates the motor car and is simply not fit for purpose in an era when mobile phone technology is significantly changing the way people access private hire vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIn recent years, we\u2019ve seen a number of child sexual exploitation cases that have involved taxi and PHV holders abusing the trust that has been placed in them, so there are strong safeguarding reasons for strengthening current legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe onset of mobile phone booking apps for PHVs is causing concern about whether drivers are able to compete on a level playing field and has led to numerous and costly legal challenges which local licensing authorities are being forced to spend public money on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cLocal licensing authorities are trying to work out how new models fit within a legislative framework drafted before mobile phones were even invented, when what is really needed is clarity on a new legislative framework that allows for a 21st century way of doing things fairly for passengers, councils and drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe need for reform is now urgent.
