Following the news that Wigan County Council have experienced more than 80 data breaches in the past 2 years, the council has reinforced the importance of data security to all its staff.<\/p>\n

Brendan Whitworth, assistant director for legal services at Wigan Council told GPSJ: \u201cInformation security is a high priority for Wigan Council.<\/p>\n

“When a data loss happens, officers from internal audit work with the council\u2019s data protection officer to ensure the breach is properly investigated, that adequate remedial action is taken (including disciplinary action if required) and lessons learned are communicated widely.<\/p>\n

“We continue to reinforce the importance of data security to all our staff with relevant training to support this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jon Fielding, Managing Director, EMEA Apricorn told GPSJ today:\u00a0“80 breaches over 2 years is significant and is rightly of concern to the council. However, in their defence, they have recognised this fact and are taking action in conjunction with their Data Protection Officer.<\/p>\n

“This also tells me that the council is aware of, and taking steps to be complaint with the upcoming GDPR regulations that will require compliance in 2 months.<\/p>\n

“They have caught the issue at the right time, i.e. before GDPR is in force, and I would encourage all businesses, whether they are in the public or private sector, to do the same.”<\/p>\n
