Museum of Transport – Greater Manchester

The Museum of Transport, Greater Manchestertells the story of, and promotes, public road transport in Greater Manchester from its very beginnings in 1824 to the present day.

The collection spans over 100 years, from an 1890s horse bus to a full size prototype Metrolink tram. Opened in 1979 the Museum is a partnership between Transport for Greater Manchester and Greater Manchester Transport Society and is an early example of successful partnership working between a local authority and a voluntary body.

Our product is a living history experience visitor attraction, with a strong emphasis on nostalgia.

It is designed for audiences who want to experience and understand what it was like to live and travel in times gone by.

Our collection and displays are the experience:

  • We offer the opportunity for visitors to delve into the past, experiencing the modes of travel used by ordinary people from an earlier time in Greater Manchester.
  • Visitors are able to experience the sights, sounds and smells of transport.
  • We tell the story in terms of its social impact.
  • We explain the impact of technological developments.
